A static IP address has a fixed assignment that stays in place until it is changed or released. A dynamic IP address is assigned for temporary use and can change when the network assigns it again.
The practical difference is predictability. A fixed address helps when another system needs to find the same device or recognize the same connection over time. Dynamic assignment reduces the work of managing addresses for devices that come and go.

What is a static IP address?
A static IP address is kept assigned to a particular connection or resource. On a local network, an administrator might configure a printer with a fixed private address. In a cloud, an address can be retained as a resource and attached to a server.
For example, an AWS Elastic IP address is a static public IPv4 address allocated to an account until it is released. It can be reassigned to another eligible resource within the service’s limits.
Static does not mean the address is yours forever or can follow you to any provider. Retention and reassignment depend on the network and service supplying it.
What is a dynamic IP address?
A dynamic address is allocated for a limited period, often called a lease. Many IPv4 networks use DHCP, the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, to assign addresses and other settings automatically.
A device can renew its lease and continue using the same address. The network may also assign it a different address later. Reconnecting or restarting the device therefore does not guarantee a change. These behaviors are covered in RFC 2131.
For a visitor’s laptop or a phone joining Wi-Fi, automatic assignment is convenient: the user does not need to choose an unused address and configure the network manually.
Is a DHCP reservation the same as a static IP?
A DHCP reservation tells the DHCP server to offer a particular address to a recognized device. The device still requests its configuration automatically, but receives a consistent assignment.
For example, an office might reserve 192.168.10.50 for its printer. That differs from typing the address into the printer itself: the reservation is managed centrally by the DHCP server. Microsoft’s DHCP configuration guide describes reservations based on an address and a device’s network-interface identifier.
Both methods can provide a stable local address. If you configure one manually, coordinate it with the network’s allocation rules so it is not also given to another device.

When is a static IP useful?
A fixed address helps when something depends on that address remaining stable:

For partner access, check the address the partner actually sees. It may belong to your router, VPN, or NAT gateway, rather than the device making the request. Giving a laptop a fixed private address does not make its internet-facing address static.
When is a dynamic IP enough?
Dynamic addressing is generally sufficient for ordinary browsing, streaming, and devices that initiate connections without needing a fixed incoming endpoint. It also suits guest networks, where many devices connect temporarily.
For a service reached by name, dynamic DNS can update the name’s DNS record when the public address changes. Cloudflare’s dynamic DNS documentation gives an example of automating these updates.
Dynamic DNS keeps a name aligned with a changing address. It does not make the address static, remove firewall restrictions, or solve every problem caused by address sharing at the provider.
Is static the same as public or dedicated?
No. These terms describe different properties:
- Static or dynamic: whether the assignment is fixed or can change.
- Public or private: the address’s scope on the network.
- Dedicated or shared: whether a service uses an address exclusively for one customer or shares it among customers.

How do you know which type you have?
For a local address, inspect both the device’s configuration and the router or DHCP server. An automatic setting on the device could still be backed by a reservation.
For a public address, check your provider’s service details or the address resource in your cloud account. Seeing the same address on an IP-checking page for several days does not prove it has a guaranteed fixed assignment.
